The DNA fits into our cells nucleus (even though, unraveled, it is over 2 meters long) because of the complex shape it is in. It is not tangled at ALL surprisingly! It's called Cellular something.... Sorry.. I dunno the exact name of the shape but I'd bet if you look it up on the net, you'd find some cool pictures.

DNA is packaged and condensed into a complex structure called chromatin by wrapping around histone proteins. This compaction allows the long DNA molecule to fit inside the nucleus of a cell. Additionally, DNA can undergo further coiling and folding during cell division to form densely packed chromosomes.

As your question implies, if the DNA in one of your cells was stretched out, it would be over 3 feet long. The DNA is coiled around histone protein complexes called nucleosomes which effectively decreases the length of the DNA molecules (analogous to a slinky toy). The histone proteins are positively charged due to the amino acids lysine and arginine and the DNA is negatively charged due to the phosphate groups.

DNA is *extremely* small; remember, when you see that double-helix shape, those are molecules!

In addition to being extremely small, DNA also coils up into chromosomes like a coil of wire. The concept that if you stretched a single cell's DNA out, it would reach extremely far is TRUE, but it can be very misleading.

DNA is tightly would around the protein histone and histone forms even tighter complexes that are capable of packing all the DNA into the nucleus.
