Oxygen.

Virtually all of the ozone in the "Ozone Layer," which is in the stratosphere and not the troposphere where we live, is formed from oxygen atoms and oxygen molecules.

If light with a wavelength shorter than 240 nm is absorbed by a molecule of oxygen, O2, then the oxygen molecule can split into two oxygen atoms. A photon of UV light normally cleaves the oxygen molecule, but an X-ray may also cause the cleavage. Thus the first step in the formation of ozone is:

O2 + hν (<240 nm) ---> 2 O.

The reaction that produces ozone proceeds very slowly because it requires that three species collide at the same time. The reaction to form ozone is:

O. + O2 + M ---> O3 + M, where M is usually a molecule of nitrogen, but it could be a helium atom, an argon atom, or even another oxygen molecule. The formation of ozone is exothermic, meaning that energy is released, and another species, M, is necessary to absorb this excess energy or the ozone just formed or nearly formed may fly apart as a molecule of diatomic oxygen and an oxygen atom.

Some ozone is created from the right cosmic radiation and a molecule of oxygen. An alpha particle and a beta particle with the right kinetic energies may collide with O2 to form helium and a molecule of ozone. The reaction is:

α + β + O2 ---> He + O3

Little to none of the ozone created from pollution, lightning, or from other electrical discharges in the air makes its way up to the Ozone Layer. Ozone is a very powerful oxidizing agent, therefore it is a very reactive species. It readily attacks rubber, causing it to harden and crack like an old rubber band, and it does damage lung tissue. Normally our body can repair any damage faster than it is created, although the elderly, the very young, or persons that are ill are often adversely affected by what is ultimately man-made ozone.

What is the gas that absorbs ultraviolet radiation?

Ozone is the gas that absorbs ultraviolet radiation in the Earth's atmosphere. It forms a protective layer in the stratosphere that helps to shield the planet from the harmful effects of UV radiation.

A gas that is a form of oxygen which created a layer of gas in the upper atmosphere?

Ozone is a gas form of oxygen that is found in the Earth's upper atmosphere. It forms a layer known as the ozone layer, which plays a crucial role in protecting life on Earth by absorbing the majority of the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation.

What gas molecule found in Earths atmosphere is made up of three oxygen atoms?

The gas molecule is ozone (O3). It is formed when oxygen (O2) molecules are split apart by ultraviolet radiation in the upper atmosphere and then recombine to form ozone. Ozone helps to protect Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

Which layer of the atmosphere is considered the ozone layer?

The layer containing ozone gas in the stratosphere region of the earth is known as ozone layer. Ozone is the triatomic form of oxygen.

Which gas absorbs ultraviolet radiation?

Ozone gas present in the stratospheric region of our atmosphere in the form of ozone layer is the one most prominent gas which is responsible for the absorption of the harmul UV radiations coming from the sun.

Which layer in the atmosphere contain most of the ozone gas?

The ozone layer is primarily found in the stratosphere, which is the second layer of Earth's atmosphere. This layer is located above the troposphere where we live and breathe, and it contains a majority of the Earth's ozone gas which plays a key role in filtering out harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

Is the most abundant gas in the atmosphere ozone?

Ozone is extremely rare in the Earth atmosphere.

Which of the gases in the atmosphere is reactive?

Oxygen is the most reactive gas in the atmosphere. It readily combines with other elements and compounds to form oxides.

What is the important gas in the atmosphere that absorbs ultraviolte radiation from the sun?

The ozone gas is the important one in atmosphere. It is present inside the stratospheric region of atmosphere.

What is the most important gas in the atmosphere that absorbs ultraviolet radiation from the sun?

The most important gas which absorbs Uv radiations from the sun is ozone. This ozone is present in the form of ozone layer in the atmosphere.

What gas stronglu absorbs ultraviolet radiation in the atmosphere?

Ozone gas does that. It is present as the ozone layer.

Which layer of earth's atmosphere contains a gas that absorbs ultraviolet radiation?

The ozone layer, which is located in the stratosphere, contains a gas called ozone that absorbs ultraviolet radiation from the sun. This absorption of UV radiation helps protect life on Earth by reducing the amount of harmful UV rays that reach the surface.
