A pH number is a figure which expresses the acidity or alkalinity of a liquid, and uses a scale in which 7 represents neutral, lower numbers represent acidic substances, and higher numbers represent alkaline substances. If the substance is acidic, it will have more hydrogen ions in it, while if it is alkaline, it will have more hydroxide ions in it. Mathematically, the scale is logarithmical, with the formula being -log 10 c, where c represents the hydrogen ion concentration in moles per liter.
