Newton's first law states that, simply, an object in motion will stay in motion unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. It also gives the idea that an object that is at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an unbalanced force. Friction mostly has to do with the first part of Newton's first law.

The unbalanced force can be practically anything, like a shoe or tree. If there isn't anything that is going to counteract with the moving object, it will still stop. Why? Friction. It counts as an unbalanced force because it interferes with the motion of the object and in addition to that, it moves in the opposite direction of the moving object.

The first law says that if no force acts on a mass its velocity is constant.

Friction would, of result in a force on the mass, so the law would not apply.

The first law actually defines frames of reference in which the remaining laws apply. Suppose you were sitting in an accelerating car watching this mass on which no force was acting. Its velocity would not appear to constant. So the first law in effect says this is not a good frame of reference for the purposes of Newtonian physics.

The good frames are called "Inertial Frames".

Because of gravity, its hard to find an "Inertial Frame" in nature. For short periods of time the inside of the International Space Station is a good choice. Here on earth you have to fudge things by treating gravity as a "force" even though you feel the force of gravity but aren't being accelerated!

But Einstein's Theory of General Relativity allows you to do physics in any frame of reference (from your accelerating car, for example, or on a roundabout - in General Relativity, centrifugal force (the force that pulls you outwards on a roundabout) is as real as gravity - there is none of this nonsense about "real" versus "fictitous"

That's because Newton's First Law basically considers the case that no forces act on an object, or that the net force is zero. With friction, there is always a force, and this force is quite often unbalanced.
