Mushrooms are the fruiting bodies of fungi. They do not eat anything not even the vitamins and minerals found in soil, they are simply there to help spread more fungal spores around. Fungi like moist, stagnant soil to grow in.

Mushrooms do not photosynthesize like plants do, so they do not make their own food. Instead, they obtain nutrients by decomposing organic matter in their environment. This process allows them to break down dead plant material and absorb the nutrients they need to grow.
