You could see it as a shadow in front of a light background, provided that the object is not completely transparent.
Also you see non-luminous objects because the light reflects off the object and into our eyes so that why at night you can only see a faint out line of the objects around you and most of the time at night you feel your way around the room in the dark .
the retina allows light to enter where inside the eye a picture or a puzzle is created based upon the different wavelengths which is then sent to the brain to be processed into what we call a picture.
I'm not sure if this is the best answers but this is what we learned in our science unit on the eye. We dissected a sheep's eye to get a better understanding too.
Light enters the eye through the cornea which protects the eye and acts like a lens. The light then goes to the iris and pupil which work together. The iris has muscles that contract and expand to change the size of the pupil to let in the amount of light that is needed. the light passes through the iris and pupil to the lens which refracts the light and creates the image upside down. The ciliary muscles hold the lens behind the pupil and they make the lens thinner or wider to focus on the image. The rods and cones get the image. Rods respond to dim light and cones respond to the primary colors and bright light. The rods and cones are located on the retina. They send signals through the retina to the optic nerve which sends those signals to your brain and processes the image and flips it right side up so you are able to see the image.
by the way I did type that by myself and I didn't copy it from anything! I SWEAR

we see non luminous things because white light like sunlight is made up of the spectrum of colours ( red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet) and the light hits an object and absorbs the colours it is not, say if you had a green shirt it wold absorb red, orange, yellow, blue, indigo and violet, and it reflects green back. and if you shone a red light in a green t-shirt it would most likey look black because the top absorbs all the red light as it it green not red. we did this in school last year that is how i know this. Non-luminous objects are seen by directing a source of light at them
and observing the light that reflects from them.
Examples of this process include:
-- Light a candle or turn on the electric light in your room at night.
-- Shine a flashlight on a rock at night.
-- In order to see the moon, shine the sun on it.
Non-luminous. Objects which produce light of their own or give out or emit their own light are called luminous objects. Objects which do not produce light of their own, on the other hand, are called non-luminous objects. Luminous objects are objects like stars, sun and other celestial bodies which give out their own light. Objects surrounding us are not such light emitting objects. Therefore, we are surrounded by non-luminous objects.
Luminous objects are those which can produce or give out light of their own, while non-luminous objects cannot produce or give out their own light. Some examples of luminous objects would be the sun, stars, fireflies, glowworms and some deep sea fish Some examples of non-luminous objects would be the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars,Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and also Moons.
Luminous objects create light .A non luminous object does not give off light. For instance, my feet are not luminous. Our sun and the rest of the stars in the universe are luminousNon-luminous objects are the ones who doesn't have its own light like you can say moon, trees, branches, plants, metals mirrors bricks etc.
A self-luminous source is an object that produces its own light through a process like combustion or nuclear fusion, as opposed to reflecting light like non-luminous objects. Examples include stars, light bulbs, and fireflies.
a non-luminous object is something that doesn't give out light, it reflects light from an other source like the moon.
Objects that do not emit or give out light or energy of their own are referred to as non-luminous objects.
Objects that don't give out light are called "non-luminous objects." These objects reflect light that falls on them, making them visible to our eyes.
Luminous objects usually give out the light that they make on their own. An example of a luminous object is a star or an LED lamp.
Luminous objects emit light on their own, such as the sun or a light bulb. Non-luminous objects do not emit light but can be seen by reflecting light from luminous sources, like the moon or a book.

Luminous objects are those that emit light of their own, such as the Sun, stars, and fireflies. They are sources of visible light due to processes like nuclear fusion or chemical reactions occurring within them.
A body that can give off electromagnetic radiation (light) such as the Sun, a lightbulb, etc.
An object that doesn't give out light is called a non-luminous object. These objects do not emit their own light but can reflect light from other sources.
A luminous object is something that emits/gives off light - eg sun, star, light bulb, A non-luminous object is something that doesnt have/give off its own light - eg moon, diamond, wood. Non-luminous objects can only be seen because they reflect light, which is given off by luminous objects.
Luminous - bodies are objects which exhibit their own light.EXAMPLE:-SUNnon-luminous bodies are objects that reflect light from luminous bodiesEXAMPLE:-moonLuminous bodies are insects that give a light, such as the glow worm. Non luminous bodies do not glow o their own. it can also refer to things in space; such as planets, moons and stars
