During La Nina, cooler-than-average sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean lead to changes in atmospheric circulation patterns. This can result in increased rainfall in the western Pacific and parts of the Americas, leading to wetter-than-normal conditions in some regions (such as Australia and Southeast Asia) and drier conditions in others (such as the southwestern United States). La Nina can also enhance hurricane activity in the Atlantic Ocean.
During a La Niña event, cooler than normal sea surface temperatures occur in the central and eastern tropical Pacific Ocean. This can lead to increased rainfall in the western Pacific, drought conditions in the western United States, and an active hurricane season in the Atlantic. Additionally, La Niña can disrupt global weather patterns, affecting agriculture, fisheries, and water resources worldwide.
Upwelling is weaker during a normal pattern El Niño event. This is because El Niño brings warmer sea surface temperatures, which suppress the nutrient-rich cold water that drives upwelling along the coast. In contrast, La Niña events typically enhance upwelling due to cooler sea surface temperatures.
Several things occur during an La Nina event, including warmer than normal winters, and colder than normal summers. Drier conditions may also occur.
The Pacific decadal curret oscillation (Warm to cool to warm to cool to . . .) and these oscillations in turn cause La Nina and El Nino.
