Hurricane Sandy (aka Extratropical Storm Sandy) was a late-season Atlantic hurricane that affected Jamaica, Cuba, the Bahamas and the eastern US in late October 2012. It became the largest in size of any Atlantic storm on record, although its winds never exceeded Category 2 (110 mph). After forming in the western Caribbean, Sandy moved north and hit Jamaica and Cuba, and crossed into the Atlantic as a minimal hurricane. It then transitioned into a powerful extratropical windstorm. It had maximum winds of about 90 mph as it swept the Atlantic seaboard and made a devastating landfall in New Jersey and southern New York. The damage there made it the second costliest hurricane in US history, second only to Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The storm surge of Sandy did major damage to Staten Island, NY, and flooding extended inland to many areas of eastern Pennsylvania.
