Most druse crystals found in plants are made of calcium oxalate star-like in shape. They are thought to deter herbivory, and a number of species of plants are poisonous to humans, as well as animals, due to the high calcium oxalate.

The Druse Crystal in a plant cell, kills any harmful bacteria that has invaded by the cell membrane. (a clear rigid molecular covering around the cell that gives it complete control what does in and out of the cell.) if the ruse crystal fails to stop the harmful virus or bacteria, the cell collapse and shuts down killing the bacteria inside of it so it doesn't spread to other cells. Druse crystals in plants serve as a storage form of calcium and oxalate. They help regulate calcium levels in plant cells, act as a defense mechanism against herbivores by causing mouth irritation, and can also contribute to the mechanical support of plant tissues.

In botany, druse crystals are thought to help in regulating calcium. Because druse contain poisonous substances, they are believed to help protect plants against having parts of their foliage eaten by insects.
