To prove that light is needed for photosynthesis you must:

1. De-starch a plant by leaving it 48 hours in the dark.

2. Cover part of a leaf

3. Allow the plant to photosynthesis in light for 4 hours

4. Test leaf for starch (starch turns iodine solution black)

*Starch should not be present in the area you have covered as light is will not have been able to pass through.

*You can use black masking tape or aluminum foil to cover the wanted area of the leaf.

Experiments that involve placing a plant in the dark and observing a lack of oxygen production or glucose formation due to the absence of sunlight would demonstrate the reliance of photosynthesis on sunlight. Another experiment could involve different light intensities to show the varying rates of photosynthesis based on light availability. Lastly, using a prism to separate sunlight into different colors and observing which colors are most effective for photosynthesis can also illustrate the need for sunlight in this process.

Materials:

4 plants

A room with lots of light

A room with no light

A room with partial light

A room with very little light

Put one plant in front of a window. Put the next plant in a dark room, like your basement cellar or under your bed. Put the third one in a room with partial light, like maybe your bedroom with one window half-closed. Put the last one in a room with little light, like maybe in your bathroom or something with the light on. Wait a few days and only give a tiny bit of water to each plant, and then after a few days go back and check on the plants. Hopefully the one that was in full light will be the biggest, the one in the partially lit room will be the next biggest, the one in the little light room will be not very big, and the one in the dark room will be the smallest. Have fun experimenting!

Why do you need light in photosynthesis?

We need light in photosynthesis as Light provides the energy source. The process is based on light. The plants use light to convert energy. The same reason that we need air to breath.

Roots are underground so they don't get any energy from sunlight they need for photosynthesis.
