The 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro defined "biodiversity" as "the variability among living organisms from all sources, including, 'inter alia', terrestrial, marine, and other aquatic ecosystems, and the ecological complexes of which they are part: this includes diversity within species, between species and of ecosystems". This is, in fact, the closest thing to a single legally accepted definition of biodiversity, since it is the definition adopted by the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity. Biodiversity then, consitsts of the entire range of variation of living organisms across all levels of organizations (genes, species, ecosystems).

The three components of biodiversity are genetic diversity, species diversity, and ecosystem diversity. Genetic diversity refers to the variety of genes within a population; species diversity is the variety of different species within an ecosystem; and ecosystem diversity is the variety of habitats, communities, and ecological processes within a given area.

What are five ways that human activity reduces biodiversity?

Habitat destruction due to activities such as urbanization and deforestation can directly lead to loss of biodiversity. Pollution, such as chemicals and waste from industrial activities, can disrupt ecosystems and harm organisms within them. Overexploitation of resources through activities like overfishing or hunting can deplete populations of species. Introduction of invasive species through human activities can outcompete native species and disrupt ecosystems. Climate change resulting from human activities can alter habitats and affect the ability of species to survive and reproduce.

Does a banana plantation have low biodiversity or high biodiversity?

Banana plantations typically have low biodiversity, as they are monocultures focused solely on growing bananas. This lack of diversity in plant and animal species can make banana plantations more vulnerable to pests, diseases, and environmental changes. Introducing practices like agroforestry or intercropping can help increase biodiversity on banana plantations.
