Mt. Kilauea on Hawaii is a basaltic shield volcano. This sort of volcano produces basalt lava which is not tremendously gassy and quite hot and runny. Thus unless water gets into the volcano's pluming (in which case there can be violent explosive eruptions), they are usually quiet, well behaved volcanoes.They do however erupt continuously for long periods of time, Kilauea is perhaps, the most active volcano on Earth.
