Gas exchange does not occur in the pleura. The pleura is a membrane that lines the outside of the lungs and inside of the chest cavity. Gas exchange, where oxygen is taken in and carbon dioxide is removed, happens in the alveoli of the lungs.

Innermost layer of the pleura is known as?

The innermost layer of the pleura is known as the visceral pleura. This thin membrane covers the surface of the lungs and is in close contact with the lung tissue.

What is the innermost layer of the pleura known as?

Visceral pleura. The parietal pleura surrounds the outside of the lung. When you are dissecting, the parietal pleura is the layer of lung that you remove. It is difficult to remove the visceral pleura, but not impossible.

Is the visceral pleura superficial to the parietal pleura?

No, the parietal pleura is superficial to the visceral pleura. The parietal pleura lines the inner surface of the thoracic cavity, while the visceral pleura covers the surface of the lungs.

What pressure is the gas pressure between the visceral and parietal pleurae?

Lungs are totally elastic organs. They are kept in position by negative pressure in visceral and parietal pleura. There is no gas in cavity between both pleura. In fact both pleura are part of one one collapsed balloon. Very small amount of fluid in cavity between pleura keeps it lubricating. If air accidentally enters there, then there is a condition called as Pneumothorax. There is also a condition called as Tension Pneumothorax. Which is an emergency.

What is the membrane covering the lung and chest cavity?

The membrane lining on the lung is the visceral pleura and the membrane lining the inside of the chest cavity is the parietal pleura.

Which gas law explains why there is much carbon dioxide exchanged between alveoli as there is oxygen exchanged?

diffusion

What connection between alveolus and visceral pleura?

The aveoli are microscopic pockets in the lung where gas exchange occurs. The visceral pleura is a membrane that covers the entire lung. There is no connection except that they both involve the anatomy of the lung.

Which system does pleura go?

The pleura are part of the respiratory system. The pleura are the membranous coverings of each lung.

Common name for pleura?

A Pleura is the lung cover.
