traveling either east or west from the Prime Meridian.

But the usual, common answer is "West", because the distance is

much shorter that way.

Also, if you enjoy getting technical, there is a single point on the Prime

Meridian where Virginia is exactly south of you, and there is a single point

on the Prime Meridian where Virginia is exactly north of you.
