∙ 15y agoYes you can get rabies from a WILD rat.But PET rats do not carry rabies because at the pet store, they receive rabies shots before they are put on sale. This is why you should never touch a wild rat if you ever encounter one. If you somehow get bit by a wild rat seek immediate medical attention as in going to the hospital to get a rabies shot. If a PET rat bites you do not worry because they WILL NOT carry this disease.
