The single most safety measure to hurricanes are abiding by mandatory evacuation orders. Secondary aspects to pre, during and post storm procedures to those in non evacuation zones are keeping sufficient food, water and storm supplies until services are restored.

To protect yourself during a hurricane, stay informed by listening to weather alerts and evacuation orders. Secure outdoor furniture and windows, gather emergency supplies, and have a plan in place for evacuation if necessary. Seek shelter in a sturdy building away from flood-prone areas, and stay indoors until the storm passes.

Ideally, those in areas prone to hurricane damage should evacuate, and return when the storm has passed. Even if a storm leaves property undamaged, there may be no food, water, electricity, or medical services for days or weeks after a major storm.

If you cannot leave the danger area, you should have sufficient food, water, medicine, and emergency supplies (batteries, first aid materials, blankets) to last for several days. The safest location in a hurricane is a multi-story steel or concrete building well inland from the shoreline. Winds and storm surges can easily destroy all structures close to the shore. Mobile homes should never be used as shelter during a tropical storm.

The best thing to do is to secure your property, take only your most valuable belongings, and evacuate the area of the storm, especially areas that are prone to flooding. If there is ample time, you may want to tape or board up windows to reduce wind damage. But you need to get out of the path as soon as possible, because roadways can become blocked by water or debris.

If you are trapped in an area that will receive high winds, the safest locations are multi-story steel and concrete buildings. While basements are safe from winds, they are not safe from flooding. If you hide in an attic, you may die if the roof blows off or water comes up inside your house.

NO LOCATION ON A SHORELINE is safe: storm surges have been known to eradicate all structures within 1/2 mile of a beach or waterfront. Always listen to advice from local storm warning centers, and be sure that you have access to a sufficient supply of water, food, and medicines. If these are not available, you should relocate to a more suitable location where storm effects will be less severe.

One way to save yourself from a hurricane is to block of your doors and windows with a strong material (metal or wood) and stay in the middle of your house. Another way is to find out about the hurricane before it happens, then you could take all of your valueble belongings and stay somewhere else with your family & friends. You might stay at a hotel or at someones house and then here from someone that the hurricane is over.

First of all you should always be prepared in case of a hurricane! being prepared as in having a first aid kit, and a container with food or your belongings to survive the hurricane. If you know a hurricane is coming, you should grab what ever is valuable to you, get in a car, and evacuate the area. Evacuate areas that are low-lying or immediately along the shoreline. If you choose to rise it out, stay inside at all times and be prepared to move upstairs if water enters your home.
