Most clovers have 3 leaves though if you look long enough you will get 'lucky' and find a 4 leaf clover. Both are normal, 3 is most common.

Being born and brought up in Ireland I believe that I am qualified to answer the question.

The legend goes- Saint Patrick, having banished snakes from Ireland preached the word of his god.

The simple folk of the island could not get to grips with the holy trinity; Three beings in one. He is said to have plucked a leaf of Shamrock and explained that the " Holy Trinity" was like the little plant.

That was, THREE leaves on One stem.

So the true shamrock has Three leaves and nothing to do with lucky clover.

Although Shamrock is a clover, the leaves are very, very small., all Three leaves can fit on a single leaf of "standard clover.

I do hope that's not too long and helps.

Around saint Patrick's feast day March the Seventeenth which happens to be my own birthday, the press and especially the inter-web are full of images of four leafed clover.

Almost all clovers have Four leaves, so to find a FIVE leafed clover might be lucky.

My wife has never seen one and she's a real cow LOL.....I love her really.

Slainte, D. PATRICK Faloona.

There endeth' my PhD on Shamrock Lol
