That depends totally on the kind of bird. some Birds of Prey take weeks before they can leave the nest, while I've seen chickadees hatch their eggs, raise the young, and be gone in a week. most Songbirds take a week to two weeks, while some larger birds and birds of prey take much longer. rule of thumb: the larger the bird, the longer it takes.
hope this helped!
It takes usually 12 weeks for the babies to fledge and they stay another month
with the parents thereafter.
I don't know who the guy who posted the first part of this answer is, but he's wrong. Of course, the exact answer is going to depend on the type of bird. But your average backyard/songbird will begin learning to fly in less than two weeks. I know this for sure because as I write this I am listening to the sound or a mother wren "teaching" her babies to fly. The nest is on my porch. It showed up about two months ago. I'm not sure exactly when the eggs were laid, but they hatched between eleven and thirteen days ago. And today I heard all of them - mom and babies - chirping like mad. When I went to investigate I discovered the whole family out of the nest, with two of the fledglings taking short flights around the yard. All the chirping was because one of the fledglings has been unable to find his way off the porch - it's a screen porch, with only a small torn place for the birds to get in and out.
Looking at other sources on the internet confirms the info I've just given you. Small birds take about two weeks from hatching to beginning to learn to fly. They'll look like, and fly nearly as well as, adults in another two weeks.
The only birds that MIGHT take as long to fly as the above user claims would be very large birds of prey like eagles or owls. But I really don't think even they spend that much time in the nest.
