The Christchurch earthquakes started on September 4, 2010, with the last major event occurring on February 22, 2011. Aftershocks continued for several years, with the most significant one being the June 13, 2011 event. The overall seismic activity in Christchurch lasted for several years, impacting the region on various scales.

The Christchurch earthquake on 22 February 2011 had a duration of around 10-15 seconds, but its impact was devastating, causing significant damage and loss of life.
It is important to known how long an earthquake will last so that scientist will know if there will be a bigger one. The bigger earthquakes are called main-shock.
Although quakes on the moon are much weaker (and rarer) than those on Earth, they can last for much longer. We live in far damper environment than is on the moon and the seismic vibrations of our earthquakes will eventually be calmed by the moisture in the atmosphere. While an earthquake typically lasts for just a few seconds (10-30 for most moderate earthquakes), moonquakes can last up to an hour.
alot of earthquakes
The Christchurch earthquake fault last moved significantly during the 2010-2011 earthquakes. Scientists use a combination of geological mapping, GPS data, and monitoring of ground deformation to track the movement of faults over time and determine when they have last ruptured. By examining historical seismic data and studying the distribution of earthquakes along a fault, scientists can also estimate the recurring interval of fault movement.

Quite a few! But that's expected after a major quake. The link below will show you all earthquakes for the last 7 days.

I think that it was the earthquake that caused more damage to the Christchurch Cathedral. :)

Not one big quake. There are usually small after shocks after a larger one. Some of the small ones you can feel, but most are so small you don't know it. Ever been in a earthquake? It is an experience.
