The cocci (sphere-shaped bacteria) gather in little sections and stick together, eventually covering an entire surface. They look like little dots all stuck together in groups, basically. They're gram positive, meaning they show-up purple on a stain.
Under a microscope, strep throat appears as clusters or chains of bacteria called Streptococcus pyogenes. These bacteria are spherical in shape and can be stained to show up more clearly. Streptococcus pyogenes are usually gram-positive, meaning they retain a purple color after staining.
Most people do not know that names for bacteria are given to describe their shapes. Gonorrhoea bacteria (Neisseria gonorrhoeae) are a gonococcus-type bacteria, and are therefore shaped like coffee beans. So if you look at the good ol' Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacteria under a microscope, you will see a bunch of coffee-bean shapes.
