Using plug spawn, just drill holes in oak branches or small trunks. Place plug spawn in the holes, and seal with hot wax. Bury upright about 6 inches in ground, and keep wet.

To grow shiitake mushrooms, you need to inoculate hardwood logs with shiitake spawn, keep the logs in a shady, humid location, and maintain proper ventilation. Harvest the mushrooms when they have reached the desired size, usually after about six months. Regularly soak the logs to encourage mushroom growth.
