Eukaryotes evolved from a process call endosymbiosis. Endosymbiosis states that eukaryotes started as two separate bacterium. The bigger bacteria engulfed the smaller. This is how the mitochondria is enclosed in the cell. There is evidence of this because the mitochondria has its on cell membrane and contains its own DNA.
The evolution of the first eukaryote is thought to have occurred through a process called endosymbiosis where a prokaryotic cell engulfed a free-living bacterium, leading to the development of more complex cell structures. This symbiotic relationship allowed for the exchange of resources and eventually led to the formation of mitochondria and chloroplasts within eukaryotic cells.
