the west produced raw materials which were sold to the east, who had major industry. they eventually turned the raw materials into finished products and sold them back to the west.

So the biggest affect was that it made our country self sufficient. We did not have to rely on other nations for raw materials like we have to now. (oil, technology, ect.) The effects of Westward expansion included rapid growth of business and new cities, railroads, gold mines, and crime as well.
