Niels Bohr proposed that electrons orbit the nucleus in fixed energy levels or shells, while Erwin Schrödinger described electrons as waves surrounding the nucleus in regions of highest probability called orbitals. Bohr's model was more suitable to explain the behavior of hydrogen, while Schrödinger's wave mechanics laid the foundation for quantum mechanics.
Bohr's model was only for the hydrogen atom, and it showed that electrons orbit the nucleus in definite paths. Schrodinger used the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, and his model showed that electrons have only a certain probability of being in a region around the nucleus.

Neil Bohr's model was almost similar to that of Rutherford which explained that all the positive charge was concentrated at the centre and the electrons revolved around it.
But this theory was discarded as a charged particle undergoing circular motion would
accelerate and an accelerating particle looses energy. Hence, the electron would fall into the nucleus and the atom will collapse.
But this doesn't happen. So, Bohr explained "The electrons rotate in well- defined energy levels around the nucleus and hence, do not loose energy. These electrons jump to higher energy levels and then come back to lower energy levels and thus maintain their energy".

He came up with his model of the hydrogen atom, containing this idea, in 1913. That's almost exactly 100 years ago. Neils Bohr came from Denmark and they will be celebrating this centenary, in Denmark.
