Most of Jupiter's smaller moons were actually asteroids in the asteroid belt. Jupiter's immense gravity pulled them out and into it's orbit. Some just spun around and around until it was flung into space, but most stayed to become moons.

Jupiter's smaller moons were likely captured asteroids or fragments of larger objects that were pulled in by Jupiter's strong gravitational pull. These moons are thought to have been captured early in the history of the solar system when there was a lot of debris floating around.
