  • the warmer ocean is absorbing less carbon and killing off the marine growth to use it up. We need to work on all GHGs including methane from thawing permafrost and deep sea hydrates

There are many small ways that we can contribute to this, because we can't wait till all power is renewable. We have to start now to try and slow carbon emissions:

Using less electricity:

  • Turn off appliances at the wall instead of with a remote.
  • Wash dishes and clothes only when the machine is full.
  • Use the wind and sun to dry clothes.
  • Turn off all power when leaving a room, that is, computer, lights, music, everything.
  • Wear more clothes when cold rather than turn up the heat.
  • Wear fewer clothes when hot rather than turn up the air conditioning.
Reduce oil in transport
  • Use cars less
  • car pool
  • take a bike
  • walk
  • take public transport
  • take the train, not the plane.
Planting more trees is an effort some countries are undertaking. This doesn't reduce emissions from industries or vehicles, but trees do absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen.

Two major ways we can reduce greenhouse gases are:

  1. Reduce our use of fossil fuels (coal, oil and natural gas) which all emit CO2 when burned. We can do this by reducing our electricity consumption, or changing to renewable energy sources. We can make greener choices in transport, preferring to walk, bicycle, car-pool, bus or train rather than airplane or private vehicle.
  2. Replant the great forests of the world that we have been destroying. Vegetation uses photosynthesis and the power of the sun to absorb CO2 and store the carbon, often for hundreds of years, in the case of trees.
