A tiger's stripes are formed by the arrangement of pigmented skin cells called melanocytes. During development, these cells migrate and align to create the unique stripe pattern on the tiger's fur. The gene responsible for stripe formation is thought to be regulated by the same gene that controls the overall pigmentation of the tiger.
