Yes, opportunistic microbial organisms are quick to decompose the body by literally "eating" the various nutrients that make up the human body. Eventually insects assist at a faster rate since they are larger and can consume more of the decomposing body. Additional factors often less pleasant to talk about are that the corpse looses control of it's muscle tone often leading to loss of urine and feces. Evaporation of the corpse in general is also a factor since the body no longer maintains homeostasis, and there is nothing to stop it from drying out quite extensively over time.
