Costa Rica means literally "rich coast". When Christopher Columbus arrived to America, he though that he arrived to Asia. He was obsessed with Ptolomeus stories about places in India made of gold and stuff, so Christopher Columbus described Costa Rica as a place full of gold, then spanish started to call this part of America "la Costa Rica" (the rich coast). La Costa Rica was a bigger area, almost the whole caribben coast of central America, but country limits were gradually being modified, and Costa Rica got it's name after all of this changes until it became a country.

by width i am to assume that you mean the distance from the Pacific Ocean to the Caribbean Sea, that is roughly 76 miles at its narrowest point (122 kilometers) and 172 miles (276 kilometers) at its apparent widest point (from Punta Guiones the westernmost point in Costa Rica to around the area of Barra Del Colorado in the Caribbean side). It is substantially 'wider' than Panama which is perhaps the reason the Panama Canal was built in that country. There was talk of originally building the canal in the Rio San Juan (which divides Costa Rica from Nicaragua) but those plans were abandoned when the area of Panama was deemed more suitable.
