From personal experience, I'd say that no plastic pick can replace dental floss. Most of the picks can be too wide for some gaps between teeth. If you have problems with bleeding or tender gums, the picks can cause more bleeding and swelling if your aim isn't good.

Plastic, or even wooden, toothpicks are a handy substitute to get rid of accumulations of food between the teeth, but they don't replace the need to floss.

AnswerNothing can replace floss. Period! Nothing can get in to the gingiva like a 100% flexible piece of string!

Plastic and wooden toothpics are of no good use cause they only remove the wood particles from your teeth but they don't remove the gathered plaque. A good addition to your oral hygiene is a water pik which removes the plaque when it's still soft. But for removing tough plaque you must use dental floss. Here's a video that explains and shows the proper user of dental floss -

Plastic BrushPick toothpicks can be a good substitute for dental floss in certain situations. They can be helpful for removing food particles and plaque from between teeth. However, dental floss is still considered the most effective tool for cleaning between teeth as it can reach areas that toothpicks may not. It is best to consult with your dentist to determine which option is best for your oral hygiene routine.

Where was the first wooden toothpicks made?

The toothpick has been around longer than our species. The skulls of Neanderthals, as well as Homo sapiens, have shown clear signs of having teeth that were picked with a tool.[2] It is the oldest instrument for dental cleaning. Toothpicks are well-known in all cultures. Before the toothbrush was invented, one cleaned one's teeth with hard and soft dental woods. Toothpicks made of bronze have been found as burial objects in prehistoric graves in Northern Italy and in the East Alps. It was also well-known in Mesopotamia. There are delicate, artistic examples made of silver in antiquity, as well as from mastic wood with the Romans. In the 17th century toothpicks were luxury objects similar to jewellery items. They were formed from precious metal and set with expensive stones. Frequently they were artistically stylized and enameled. The first toothpick-manufacturing machine was patented in 1872, by Silas Noble and J. P. Cooley.[3] Nowadays other means of dental hygiene are preferred like the dental floss and toothbrushes, but the usefulness of the toothpick is apparent in the fact that the plastic version of this device is a firm component of the Swiss Army knife* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toothpicks
