it was given to him by a rappernamed Black Walt while looking though a gun magazine (tec 9 a fully auto smg). Yates later applied a deeper meaning to the name, claiming that it stands for the complete technique of rhyme, with 'tech' meaning technique and 'nine' representing the number of completion
Because when he first wanted to rap he went to rapper Black Walt wanting to rap..he and his friends laughed at him until he spit a flow en started beating on his chest and was rapping fast and Black Walt was blown away so him and Tech N9ne went through a gun magazine and on the last page Black Walt saw a Tec-9 and he said "my Tec-9 be shooting fast as hell when i pull it so we gonna call you Tec-9 for your speed of rapping" they just spelled it different know as TECH N9NE
