Very often, American and British pop stars will refer to famous TV shows or famous movie stars-- in fact, originally, "Buddy Holly" was going to have a mention of movie star Ginger Rogers rather than TV star Mary Tyler Moore. The song itself is an up-beat tune about not caring what other people say. The lyrics say the singer looks like Buddy Holly: Buddy was a rising young rock star of the late 1950s, but he was not very handsome; and then he says his girlfriend looks like Mary Tyler Moore-- in the TV show in which she starred in the 1970s, she was young and cute (some people said too cute) and she always had an optimistic personality.
