This is a tough one to pin down due to the evolution of the song. From what I've read, the French artist Jaques Brel wrote the original tune in French, full of dark humor. Rod McKuen took a stab at translating it, and botched the job. The Kingston Trio cut it, The Beach Boys cut and scrapped it, until Terry Jacks decided "Why not?" McKuen changed much of the song, including the title, Le Moribund. The humor and jabs at the characters were changed to protect a naive American audience, and a top-40 tune was born. So depending on what version you want to consider, Brel wrote it, McKuen rewrote it, and Terry Jacks re-rewrote it. And you wonder why it gives some folks a headache listening to it....
