The stories of James Malcolm Rymer and Thomas Peckett Prest (The String of Pearls) that portrayed the antagonist Sweeney Todd were originally published in serialized form in The People's Periodical and Family Library from 21 November 1846 to 20 March 1847 in seventeen issues and later as an anthology edited by Robert Mack under the title Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in 2007. Prior to the 2007 anthology, Christopher Bond wrote the stage musical Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street in 1970, and Stephen Sondheim later adapted it again for stage in 1979.

There have been several adaptations of the story, to include: the 1936 film by George King, the 1998 television movie, a Ballet, and Tim Burton's 2007 movie. The only actual novel, however, was that edited by Mack.
