fr. eduardo hontiveros, sj, is the father of filipino liturgical music. he, in the late 70's as rector of the jesuit-run san Jose seminary for diocesan priests, started to compose mass songs in vernacular (tagalog). in the early 90s he was assigned in st. john vianney theological seminary, cagayan de oro, began composing litugical songs in cebuano.
following him are fr. fruto ll. ramirez, fr. nemy que, fr. manoling francisco, fr. charlie cenzon, fr. arnel dc Aquino. all jesuits. their songs are mostly sung in masses in luzon visayas and mindanao.
in the visayas, msgr. rudy villanueva heavily influenced cebuano mass with his compositions.
in mindanao, pioneer composer is the former nun, sr. nars fernandez. in ozamiz, fr. Jose maghinay started his GSK songs (in the DOPIM area (Dipolog Ozamiz Pagadian Iligan Marawi). followed by fr. lhem j. naval, also from ozamiz, whose compositions are heavily influenced by the jesuits (who trained him in vianney wayback late 90s)
