This song is a good example of collaboration: it was originally written by Angela Hunte and Jane't "Jnay" Sewell-Ulepic; but then Jay-Z (who wanted to record it) made some changes, including sampling the former hit song by the Moments "Love on a Two-Way Street," written by the late Sylvia Robinson and Bert Keyes.
Angela Hunte and Jane-t "Jnay" Sewell Ulepic (see SESAC.com) wrote it, though as many as seven individuals are credited by at least one online site. An article in a Fall 2009 SESAC magazine explains how Angela was missing New York when she wrote it. Angela and Jane-t further explained at a music seminar how personal it was, and how they did it just for their own satisfaction.
Yet, after Big Jon Platt from EMI Music heard it, he got Jay Z to record it (along with Alicia Keys) on his Blueprint 3 LP. The cast of the hit T.V. show Glee performed it as well.
