"Somewhere Over the Rainbow" was originally sung by Judy Garland in the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz wherein she played the character of Dorothy. Composed by Harold Arlen (who wrote many other pieces of popular music although perhaps none quite as famous) and with lyrics written by Yip Harburg, a performer well known in Broadway, who wrote all of the lyrics for the film.

More recent and notable renditions of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" include:

The late Eva Cassidy on her album 'Songbird,' Kylie Minogue recorded a live cover, and Danielle Hope, winner of a british Wizard of Oz themed talent show released her own version.

Israel Kamakawiwo'ole sang Somewhere Over the Rainbow. It was also in the Hawaii movie, 50 First Dates, which I highly recommend.
