The cabbage patch kids were made in the year 1983. They were actually sold during 1985. Xavier Roberts invented them. He was a designer, born in Clevlend Georgia in 1955. He made each doll with their own identity. They each had an adoption certificate and could be named. He wanted to show little kids that each and every person is unique, different. They would come wanting to find a home and to be loved. Simple things can teach us a lot!
Xavier Roberts, trained in quilting by his mother Eula May, began creating soft-sculptured dolls in the late 1970's. He called them Little People and began holding "adoption fairs" at craft shows, providing his creations with birth certificates and a legend of how they were born from a cabbage patch; customers then "adopted" the Little People, even reciting an oath of adoption. In 1982, toy company Coleco picked up the idea for mass production, changing the brand's name to Cabbage Patch Kids and giving them vinyl heads.
The manufacturer of Cabbage Patch Kids really depends on what time frame you are looking at. Xavier Roberts began making the original soft-sculptured Cabbage Patch Kids, then called Little People, right from his own home starting in 1977. Around 1982, Coleco picked up the dolls to be mass-produced with vinyl heads rather than hand-made soft faces, and the company manufactured them from 1983-1989. In 1989, Hasbro took over. (Some dolls, called transitionals, are Coleco/Hasbro hybrids from the late eighties.) In 1994, Mattel took over the brand, and in 2003, Toys 'R Us produced larger 18" dolls. Most recently, Play Along has completely revitalized the brand, producing Cabbage Patch Kids reminiscent of the original Colecos.
