Pretty much every Heavy Metal band which doesn't strictly follow the Black Sabbath/Judas Priest/Motorhead blueprint shows some degree of Punk influence. Thrash Metal is very heavily derived from Hardcore Punk, and it's been a further influence on styles such as Death Metal. Even Ice-T derives the mentality and tough guy image of his music from Punk and Hardcore, having been a fan of bands such as Discharge and GBH himself (a fact he has often paid tribute to with the covers his side project Body Count have performed).
Punk was born because of a few reasons. 1- Punk was born out of the rebelion against the music scene of the time. Bands like the Ramones and the Sex Pistols hated the fact that bands like Simon and Garfunkel were considered rock n roll. 2- Punk bands also refused to dissconect themselves from their fans and sign with major record labels. That gave punk the raw sound that we have all come to know and love. 3- Alot of early punk was influenced by 60's garage bands. Also alot of punk bands grew up listening to bands like the stooges and the mc5 who were early forms of punk rock. 4- When the Ramones released their first album they influenced alot of punk bands. Many punk musicians taught themselves to play by listening to the Ramones, and that gave alot of punk bands their fast paced loud sound. Contributed by Punkrock Wrestling

Many people say that one of the first songs to influence a lot of heavy metal was "You Really Got Me", by the Kinks. As well as that, a lot of 70s punk bands such as the Ramones influenced a lot of heavy metal artists.
It first started with the bands like Ramones in the late 70's and early 80's but the punk style became huge in early 2000's. Stuff like Baggy Dickies, crazy hair, liberty state and Mohawks. Punk bands like Sum 41, Good Charlotte, Blink 182, New Found Glory have those punk styles back then and punk influenced fashion to be rebel and different. Wish we had it back!
