Films wise- The Phantom of the Opera 1925 with Lon Chaney.
If you mean historical Sweeney Todd in fiction has been around a long long time as far back in the Victorian penny dreadful The String of Pearls (1846-1847)
Gaston Leroux's Phantom of the Opera 1910.
If you mean rock opera Phantom of Paradise 1974 which was the first musical made into a film.
In Stephen Sondheim's 1979 stage musical, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
In Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1988 stage musical Phantom of the Opera with Michael Crawford as the Phantom.
It depends in which "Phantom of the Opera" you are talking about. In the old one (a silent film), Erik is most definitely evil, but as the different adaptations of the story came about, he became more of a character you'd want to sympathize with. :)
The book (le phantome de l'opera) on which the musical is based was written in 1909 in France by Gaston Leroux - a French man who was from Paris. The well known musical version by Andrew Lloyd Webber in London in October 1986. Hope that helps
This type of opera is called 'verismo'. This school of opera came to the fore with Pietro Mascagni's Cavalleria Rusticana [1890]. Other examples are 'Pagliacci' by Leoncavallo and 'Andrea Chenier' by Giordano. Although much earlier Bizet's 'Carmen' is also of this type as it was really the first realistic opera. 'Verismo' deals with every day life / matters rather than fantasy. Further information can be found by using the link below.
In fact the opera 'Narciso' is by Alessandro Scarlatti who was Domenico's father. He wrote 115 operas of which about half are lost. The information available shows that he came to London in 1719 to direct his opera 'Narciso' at the King's Theatre.
Your probably thinking of 'Prima Donna' (pronounced the same) which literally meens 'first lady' in latin, and was used to meen the lead female singer in an opera and eventually came to meen a vain or conceited person.
The Opera was first published nearly 100 years ago in France in 1909. There have been many versions of the opera in the mid 1900s and the famous film came out in 2004.

Phantom of the opera musicIn sleep he sang to me,in dreams he came ...that voice which calls to me and speaks my name ...And doI dream again? For nowI find the Phantom of the Opera is there - inside my mind ...Sing once again with me our strange duet ...My power over you grows stronger yet ...And though you turn from me,to glance behind, the Phantom of the Opera is there - inside your mind ...Those who have seen your face draw back in fear ...I am the mask you wear ...It's me they hear ...Your/My spirit and my/your voice in onecombined: the Phantom of the Operais there - inside your/my mind ...He's there, the Phantom of the Opera ...Beware the Phantom of the Opera ...In all your fantasies, you always knew that man and mystery ...... were both in you ...And in this labyrinth where night is blind, the Phantom of the Opera is there/here - inside your/my mind ...Sing, my Angel of Music! He's there the Phantom of the Opera...

Mme Giry and Meg Giry are meant to be number 1's then Christine, Raoul and Gustav came to Coney Island. Christine came to sing and the Phantom and Christine were at the piers looking for Meg and Gustav and Meg kills Christine!!!
No, it's an opera either Andrew Lloyd Webber or Gaston Leaux came up with? I hope I helped. It was Andrew Lloyd Webber. He was deliberately trying to make it campy so that the stage actors would have a laugh.
If you mean the title song sung after Angel of Music when Erik ( the Phantom) and Christine go through the mirror towards his...uh...cave...than here they are. Christine: In sleep he sang to me In dreams he came That voice which calls to me And speaks my name. And do I dream again? For now I find The Phantom of the Opera is there Inside my mind. Phantom: Sing once again with me Our strange duet; My power over you Grows stronger yet. And though you turn from me To glance behind, The Phantom of the Opera is there Inside your mind. Christine: Those who have seen your face Draw back in fear. I am the mask you wear, Erik: It's me they hear Erik and Christine: Your/my spirit and my/your voice In one combined; The Phantom of the Opera is there Inside my/your mind. Voices: He's there, The Phantom of the Opera. Beware The Phantom of the Opera. Erik: In all your fantasies, You always knew That man and mystery Christine: Were both in you. Erik and Christine: And in this labyrinth Where night is blind, The Phantom of the Opera is there In side my/your mind. Erik(spoken): Sing, my angel of music! Christine: He's there The Phantom of the Opera. Ah___________! Erik(spoken): Sing my angel, Sing! <(^.^)>Christine: Ah__________________________!! Erik(spoken, first time only): Sing for me! (Repeat back to Yoda...) Christine: Ah______________________________ Erik(spoken): ______________________!!! Sing, My angel of music! Christine: Ah____________________________!! Ah_________________________________!! Ah________________________________!! AHHH__________________________________________________!!!!!!!!!!!! Alright. If anyone wants lyrics for any of the other songs, improve this answer saying so, and I'll post them...Any other song...any...
I have no other way to put this, so I'm going to put it this way: Don't count your chickens before they hatch. That's how it came across me.
