The Saxophone is not part of the standard orchestra. However any composer or arranger might add one if he or she wishes. The British composer Ralph vaughan Williams used one or more on several occaisions.

The saxophone is not a normal instrument in an orchestra. It will only be used in one if the composer or the director wants to have a specific sound or feel to the piece.

When it is used, it is part of the woodwind section.

Sadly, no. They would rather be drowned out by the string instruments, or they would outplay the other woodwind instruments because they have a much more open tone as they are perceptibly louder.

Another dilemma is that the saxophone was made in 1840 and did not become popular until the early 1900's. As most Classical Music was written between 1730 and 1820, there was not an instrument to put into the music.

If a saxophone is put into a symphonic orchestra most of the orchestral repertoire for sax is French music; as there is a difference in the pieces with great American or Spanish orchestras.

To which section of the orchestra does a saxophone belong?

There is a lot of debate over this, as the saxophone has the body of a brass instrument yet the mouthpiece of a woodwind. However, they are conventionally placed in the brass section, as most feel this is the one it most resembles. It is also worth noting that very few orchestras have a saxophone section, as it has a less traditional tone to many orchestral instruments, although many notable composers (shostakovich amongs them- who is an ACTUAL legend) who use saxophones in their pieces.
