The great classical composer, Joseph-Maurice (Maurice) Ravel, was born in France, in the Basque; his mother was Basque, his father Swiss.
The family moved to Paris, where Ravel later entered the Paris Conservatory. He lived mostly in Paris, retiring to the French countryside in 1921.
He continued composing, and spent four months touring the US. In 1932 he was injured in a motor accident, and suffered recurring problems thought to be from his head injury, though this is not certain, as he'd shown symptoms prior to his accident.
In 1937 he agreed to experimental brain surgery, which he did not survive. He died on December 28, 1937, at the age of 62.
Ravel was buried with his parents in northwest Paris, in Levallois-Perret cemetery.
