Some contributions include: All of those wonderful big band recordings The first major jazz concert at Carnegie Hall (1938) Many famous musicians came up through Goodman's band and went on to bigger and better things. Gene Krupa, Lionel Hampton, Jess Stacy, Teddy Wilson, Harry James, Ziggy Elman to name a few. His band was one of the first to feature several different players. His quartets and quintets were some of the first successful modern combos. One of the first, and the first of the really successful, racially integrated bands. Saving the music of Fletcher Henderson - his band didn't succeed, but Goodman used his arrangements. His classical performances renewed interest in classical clarinet. Just too many to list.

A great band leader and a pioneer in music. ===================================== To expand, Benny Goodman was the most famous Clarinet player of the Swing Era, and arguably was matched in talent only by Artie Shaw. Most fans and critics agree that his orchestra effectively launched the Swing craze in 1935. I can't do his life justice in a few short words, so I'd suggest starting with his biography as published on the official Goodman website: http://www.bennygoodman.com/about/biography.html ====================================== He is also known as the King of Swing.
Not only was he in a number of bands (e.g. Ben Pollack's) he went on to form his own orchestra. In 1935 his band jump-started the swing music craze that was just beginning and took it to national popularity. Soon he was the number-one dance band leader in the US and was known as "The King of Swing".
