Founder members Beyonce Knowles and Kelly Rowland first came together in Houston, Texas in 1990- their original group was called Girl's Tyme and actually had six members, including Tamar Davis, sisters Nikki and Nina Taylor, and rapper LaTavia Roberson.
Following their defeat on the (then) top American TV talent show Star Search in '91, Beyonce's father Mathew offered to become their manager and cut the band down to four, with the removal of the Taylor sisters and Davis and the inclusion of LaToyah Tuckett in '93. In their early years the band went through a number of names including Something Fresh, The Dolls, and Destiny. They finally adopted the name Destiny's Child in '96, inspired by a passage from the Book of Isiah in The Bible.
Tuckett and Roberson left the band in '99 following disputes with Mathew Knowles, and Michelle Williams joined, making the band's final line-up as a three-piece girl group until they split up in 2006.
