Crosby, Stills and Nash became a band in 1968. They released their first album as a band in 1969. The members of the band also released various collaborative albums and, for a while, Neil Young joined the band. Due to this, their name was changed to Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young.
Crosby, Stills, and Nash, also known as CSN, has not split up and released a new record on July 17, 2012 as well as launched a tour that same year. The group did, however, take a hiatus from 1970 to 1973 and then reformed for two years before taking another hiatus from 1974 to 1977. During those years, each band member was working on their own solo career.

I can only report what I've read elsewhere (I don't claim to have any "inside info" on this). It is the story of the tensions in and subsequent break-up of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, very creatively told as a sort of Sam Peckinpah Western movie. Eli is Stills; the Duke is Nash; Young Billy is Young, and Fat Albert is Crosby. The "Indian girl", Raven, is Rita Coolidge, who had a relationship with Stills and then left him for Nash. Of course, as usual the girl gets the blame for breaking up the band. Despite that cliche I love this brilliant album - really captures that late 60s - early 70s vibe.
