She was famous for blues singing in the 1920's. She was the most popular female blues artist of the 1920's. She began recording for Columbia records in 1923 but had been famous on the TOBA circuit for many years prior to that. She was a singer, dancer, comedian and had traveling shows but was most noted for her phenomenal voice. Columbia being a major label has the means and money to promote and produce Bessie's records. She was dubbed, "Empress of the Blues."
