They formed in 1983, with Anthony Kiedis as singer, Flea as bassist, Hillel Slovak as guitarist, and Jack Irons as drummer. In 1984, Jack Sherman replaced Hillel Slovak, and Cliff Martinez replaced Jack Irons. Up until 1988, the band lineup was Anthony, Flea, Hillel, and once again, Jack. Then D. H. Peligro replaced Jack, shortly to be replaced by current member Chad Smith. Hillel Slovak overdosed in 1988, and John Frusciante replaced him. John quit the band in 1992, replaced by two, then a final decision was made on Dave Navarro taking John's place. In 1998, Anthony, Flea, Chad, and John came back together, and that has been the lineup ever since. Long story short, they have been around since 1983.
