The band, to their huge credit, never even thought about replacing him This last part is not entirely accurate. During the Hysteria tour, the band had a back-up drummer play with Rick Allen even though he had spent time learning to play without the use of his left arm. According to the band, one show when the back-up had arrived late due to a delayed flight, he essentially said to Rick "Looks like you don't really need me anymore."

New Years Eve 1984 Rick was driving his corvette with girlfriend Miriam when a Alfa Romeo kept jumping in front of him and slowing down and when Rick tried to go around the car would speed up. Going around a curve he was going to fast and flipped his car in a field. The seatbelt had torn off his arm. The doctors had reattached his arm and it was doing ok for awhile but it started to get infected and they told him if he didn't have it removed and clear up the infection, he would lose his other arm as well.
