Lennon always insisted that he never held a regular job; his friends who went from school to work "looked like old men in six weeks". The truth was, he sometimes swept the pub where his stepfather worked, for pocket money, and he worked briefly for the local water board in Woolton. An employee ID card and job file for him turned up in the early 2000s, via an old classmate who'd kept them.
He was a delivery boy (for SPD) for a brief period of time, between coming back from Hamburg to Liverpool with The Beatles, and before trying for more gigs in Liverpool, according to his own account in The Beatles Anthology.
