Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau. In English, Land of my Fathers. The words follow, but those in italics are not usually sung.

Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau (The Land Of My Fathers)

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,

(The land of my fathers, the land of my choice,)

Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;

(The land in which poets and minstrels rejoice;)

Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,

(The land whose stern warriors were true to the core,)

Tros ryddid gollasant eu gwaed.

(While bleeding for freedom of yore.)

Cytgan (Chorus)

Gwlad, Gwlad, pleidiol wyf I'm gwlad.

(Wales! Wales! fav'rite land of Wales!)

Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,

(While sea her wall, may naught befall)

O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.

(To mar the old language of Wales.)

Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,

(Old mountainous Cambria, the Eden of bards,)

Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn I'm golwg sydd hardd;

(Each hill and each valley, excite my regards;)

Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si

(To the ears of her patriots how charming still seems)

Ei nentydd, afonydd i mi.

(The music that flows in her streams.)

Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwald tan ei droed,

(My country tho' crushed by a hostile array,)

Mae hen iaith y Cymry mor fyw ac erioed,

(The language of Cambria lives out to this day;)

Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,

(The muse has eluded the traitors' foul knives,)

Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.

(The harp of my country survives.)

James James (Iago ap Ieuan, 1833-1902), composed the tune of the national anthem of Wales 'Hen Wlad fy Nhadau' (Land of My Fathers) in 1856. His father, Evan James (Ieuan ap Iago, 1809-93), was a poet and it is believed that he wrote the words. The song was published in the volume 'Gems of Welsh Melody' (1860) and soon became extremely popular. It is not certain when the song was first adopted as the Welsh national anthem.

The Welsh National Anthem is called in Welsh : Yr Anthem Genedlaethol Cymru.

The anthem itself is - Mae Hen Wlad fy Nhadau.

Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,

Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;

Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mâd,

Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.

Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf I'm gwlad.

Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,

O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.

The national anthem of Wales is called 'Land Of My Fathers', or in Welsh 'Yn Hen Fflad Yn Nhadau' (pronounced 'un hairn flaad un nhadai'). Although none of the separate nations of Britain actually have their own OFFICIAL anthems (including England), they all have patriotic songs that have become adopted as their anthems by tradition over hundreds of years.

The song was originally called 'Banks Of The Rhondda' (or 'Glan Rhondda' in Welsh), and was written by pub landlord and amateur songwriter James James in 1856. It's popularity increased massively after it's performance by singer Thomas Llewellyn at the National Eisteddfod two years later, and from then on, it gradually became established as the Welsh anthem. The tune to it is also used in the 'national' songs of Cornwall and Brittany, although sadly, these have yet to become recognised as separate countries. The people of these two places are Celtic in origin, and are of the same Brythonic branch of the Celts as the Welsh are.

There is only one OFFICIAL national anthem in the UK, which is supposed to cover all of the UK - this is the well-known 'God Save The Queen'.

Glan Rhondda (Banks of the Rhondda), as it was known when it was composed, was first performed in the vestry of the original Capel Tabor, Maesteg, (which is nowe a working men's club), in either February 1856, by Elizabeth John who originated from Pontypridd, and it soon became popular in the locality.

James James, the composer, was a harpist who played his instrument in the public house he ran, for the purpose of dancing. The song was originally intended to be performed at a fast march pace, but had to be slowed down to its present rhythm when it began to be sung by large crowds.

In 1905, Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau became the first national anthem EVER to be sung at the start of a sporting event
